One of the hardest things for a director to do is to make a successful sequel that is as loved as the first film or season of a series. Continuing to capture lightning in a bottle season after season in a series might just be a bit harder than making a successful follow-up film. The stress involved in this process must be incredibly high. Does this mean that the end goal is unobtainable? Not necessarily. Stranger Things is hoping to follow-up the success of the first season, with a second season that will amaze viewers as much as first one did.
There are plenty of examples of television series that continue to win critical praise and fan love season after season. A few notable examples of this are X-Files, Family Guy, Lost, Seinfeld, Cheers, M.A.S.H., and there are plenty more of these shows. They continued to amaze fans throughout the course of their network runs, and garner critical praise. With Netflix taking on television series and releasing entire season runs all at one time, the pressure is amped up for show creators to maintain the success that their first seasons garner.
Shawn Levy, Stranger Things producer, is feeling the pressure of reproducing the wonder and nostalgia that the hit show contained for the second season. But what ways can the show evolve while maintaining the same essence that the first season had? According to Sawn Levy, in an interview with Southern California Public Radio, he feels this very same pressure to produce a successful sophomore season of Stranger Things:
Yes, the pressure is on. It would be so blatantly disingenuous of me to say differently. It’s scary to have people love something this much. It becomes impossible to banish all thoughts of not wanting to disappoint. This has been the challenge of it: on the one hand as we’ve see in the movie world, to do a follow-up that feels like the same thing is disappointing to an audience; to abandon things or change things [from the original], that disappoints the audience. A lot of Season 2 is next-level, some crazy stuff, but we must service these characters who are now beloved, who are known to the audience.
There is no word about how soon we can get a second season for Stranger Things, but it seems that Netflix is anxious to get a second season going.
