You can rest easy, James Cameron (Terminator 2: Judgement Day) get the rights back for The Terminator in 2019. This is great news, because Cameron has not been a part of the franchise since Terminator 2: Judgement Day, and is planning on finishing it for good. Ok, Cameron did endorse Terminator Genisys (for some reason), although that movie was pretty bad. Genisys grossed $440 million, but bombed at the box office in the US.
The Terminator is a franchise that put Arnold Schwarzenegger (and later Edward Furlong) on the map. The franchise has shown a lot of promise, but has all but fallen short of spectacular ever since Cameron left. To date, Judgement Day has grossed more than any other Terminator film, pulling in a cool $200 million domestically and $515 million worldwide. Genisys showed promise in its pretense, but took too many turns for the worse in its plot. Worse still, it was supposed to be a reset switch for the franchise.
Cameron already has plans on what he will do with the franchise to wrap the story up for good. According to a report by Deadline, Cameron will not be directing the film, but will oversee the final film about the battle between Humans and Skynet. Cameron doesn’t have time to direct the film, due to his obligations with the 15 Avatar sequels. (That’s a joke, right now Avatar will have [only] four sequels).
The report goes on to say that Cameron is currently in early talks with Deadpool director Tim Miller to helm the final Terminator film. With the Terminator franchise in a stall after the abysmal outing that Genisys there is next to no word that Skydance Productions is planning another film before Cameron gets the rights back, although David Ellison is putting out feelers to science fiction writers hoping to creatively find the movie. Ellison currently has all of the rights to the franchise.
