Like all franchises, there are certain rules to the Star Trek universe that dictate the nature of the property and keep it the way that fans want. Unfortunately one big rule implemented by creator Gene Roddenberry is about to get thrown in the trash. Star Trek: Discovery is throwing out the long-standing rule to avoid having the crew members of Starfleet be in conflict with each other.
Roddenberry’s rule has frustrated writer for multiple incarnation of the franchise over the years. It is a mindset he had when writing the foundations of the franchise. In Roddenberry’s vision, Star Trek is set in a utopian future where the human race doesn’t have conflict amongst themselves. There have been Star Trek shows that have found ingenious ways of working around this rule, and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine just ignored the rule all together.
In an interview with EW, show runners Aaron Harberts and Gretchen J. Berg have confirmed that Star Trek: Discovery will not apply in the new television series:
Harberts: “We’re trying to do stories that are complicated, with characters with strong points of view and strong passions. People have to make mistakes — mistakes are still going to be made in the future. We’re still going to argue in the future.”
Berg: “The rules of Starfleet remain the same. But while we’re human or alien in various ways, none of us are perfect.”
Harberts: “The thing we’re taking from Roddenberry is how we solve those conflicts. So, we do have our characters in conflict, we do have them struggling with each other, but it’s about how they find a solution and work through their problems.”
Another big change to the franchise is that Starfleet officers will don tactical body armor. This is a big shift from the standard uniforms worn in the past. The armor can be seen in the cover image above.
Star Trek: Discovery will stream exclusively on CBS All-Access in the US and on Netflix for the rest of the globe on September 24.
