With Star Wars Celebration finishing up over the weekend, many of the franchises stars gave additional interviews, revealing a bit about the next installment in the Star Wars franchise, The Last Jedi. Some of the big talking points was who are Rey’s parents, and what exactly does the title mean?
In an interview with ABC News, director Ryan Johnson finally solves the riddle about the film’s title, more specifically who is The Last Jedi? The big dispute is whether Jedi in the title refers to one specific person, or the entire Jedi order. It has been an ongoing fan theory that Jedi can be either singular or plural. Johnson says:
“It’s so funny when people started asking that when the title was announced because I never even pondered that question… In my mind it’s singular. They say in The Force Awakens that he’s gone on to find the last Jedi temple. Luke is the last Jedi.”
Johnson goes on to say that Rey’s parentage will be addressed in The Last Jedi, but whether we will definitely know who they are is unknown. According to Daisy Ridley, she suggests that her father is not Luke Skywalker. In an interview with ErikDavis, she talks about the beginning of the film:
“Obviously he [Luke] doesn’t know who she [Rey] is when she turns up with this frickin lightsaber he hasn’t seen in however long.”
What happens after Disney and Lucasfilm drop Star Wars Episode IX in theaters? Will the saga continue on past Star Wars 9? Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy tells Fandango:
“I certainly foresee movies past nine. Whether or not we carry on the Skywalker saga… you know, George always intended nine movies, and whether we continue that or not is something we’re talking about now. If the story warrants it, we’ll absolutely do it. If it actually inspires new ideas, then we’ll probably head in that direction. We just don’t know yet.”
Daisy Ridley also spoke with Fandango, saying that a few people who have seen The Last Jedi say it is different:
“Everyone’s like, ‘It’s different. It’s different.’ So I think with Rian’s vision and his image, and now I think he had J.J., who you know brought all the old fans back and the new fans in and he had all this stuff. Rian, I think, had more room to kind of do his thing.”
Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits theaters on December 15, 2017.
