The One Time that Internet Rumors Made Marvel Change Their Plans

The end of Avengers: Age of Ultron was originally shot to be a lot different than what we ended up with. A myriad of internet rumors actually changed how Marvel set up the ‘Hulk’s departure’ shot up, and thus changed the scope of their entire plans.

At the end of the film, when the Hulk takes the Quinjet and “leaves the planet”, the original shot was meant to be so much more. According to a recent interview with The Wrap, Marvel chief Kevin Feige says that the final shot in Avengers: Age of Ultron was supposed to show Hulk fling in space, possibly being detected near Saturn.

Marvel had to scramble when it was reported that Marvel was setting up to do a Planet Hulk movie. Feige says:

“[The Wrap] had the big scoop about us doing Planet Hulk. It turned out to be accurate [but] at the time, it was not accurate because we didn’t have any plans to do it and Joss [Whedon] was doing Age of Ultron at the time. We said, ‘Joss, we can’t do that because he’s not going into space and people are going to think we’re doing Planet Hulk[…]He goes, ‘Well, what are you going to do?’ We said, ‘We don’t know.’””

Marvel will eventually bring elements of Planet Hulk to the MCU when Thor: Ragnarok hits theaters on November 2. Ragnarok will include storyline that hints at the events of Planet Hulk happening off-screen. The inclusion meshes Planet Hulk with the Ragnarok story, creating one hell of a buddy film. Feige says that the Hulk shot at the end of Age of Ultron quells the Planet Hulk rumors, although not really. He says:

“If you go back and look at that shot in the movie, he’s in the sky. It’s blue sky. So in the movie, it’s, ‘We lost the signal out by the Caspian Sea,’” Feige says. “Or something like that, it was all earthbound.”

You hold on to that Feige, although we all still knew that a Planet Hulk film was on its way in some capacity. You can purchase tickets now for Thor.
