James Gunn on His Vision for a ‘Hitman’ Video Game Movie

The Hitman games have graced our consoles for decades. created during the stealth gameplay fads of the early 2000’s, Hitman found success, because its mechanics relied on cunning and the ability to blend in and not a player’s ability to spray bullets at a target. The concept is a unique one, and the most-recent version is an amazing game. When the franchise decided to test the waters in Hollywood, they met troubles. Both Hitman films have been panned due to poor scripting choices, and cheesy plot devices.

Earlier today on TwitterGuardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn was asked what video game he thought would make a good film. Gunn wasted no time talking about his chance at making a Hitman film:

“I tried to make a Hitman movie a few years ago. But the producers at the time didn’t want to make it R rated, so they passed.”

The most peculiar thing about Gunn’s statement is that both Hitman films are Rated-R. The global market ensured that the films were profitable (the first starring Timothy Olyphant and the second Rupert Friend), but neither film really saw success. Could Hitman have had the success of Guardians of the Galaxy? There is no way to tell, but Gunn typically comes at a project with respect to the source material. This is something the two films that exist chose to disregard.

Gunn previously stated that he also pitched ideas for a Silver Surfer film and a Spy vs. Spy movie, but neither project gained any momentum. Gunn is not having any regrets though, his hands are full with Marvel’s rag-tag group of space renegades, the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Gunn’s current film, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hits theaters in a few months on May 5, 2017.
