Digital de-aging is nothing new to Hollywood. The process has been used in a number of films over the past decade. The process is usually met with mixed reviews. Some results are good, while others are a bit less than that. A few notable examples would be from two of the latest Marvel films, Michael Douglas (Wall Street) in the beginning of Ant-Man and Robert Downey, Jr. in Captain America: Civil War. The process may happen in a future Alien film to tie the entire franchise together.
According to a recent interview, Ridley Scott is looking to try the technology. In the Empire Magazine cover story for Alien: Covenant, Scott spoke about the possibility of Sigourney Weaver returning to the franchise to lead into the original 1979 Alien film. Of course, Weaver would have to be de-aged to make the transition believable. Scott says:
“Right now we’ve got a ten-page synopsis. [Screenwriter] John Logan’s doing it. And we know where we’re going with it.’ He [Scott] is not ruling out the idea of using a digitally de-aged Sigourney Weaver to bring back Ripley: ‘You could do that,’ he allows. And Logan promises ‘different mutations’ of the Alien to come.”

In the walkup to Alien: Covenant’s theatrical release, two new TV spots have dropped, and show the crew within everyone farewell, and sending messages back home. The videos have a ‘found footage’ feel. In addition to the TV spots, Scott’s production company RSA Films will make a new VR movie for the release of Alien: Covenant. There are no details about the VR experience, but you can bet that details will come soon. The experience is being called a:
“(A) dread-inducing journey into the depths of the Alien universe. Viewers will discover the true meaning of terror as they navigate through horrifying alien environments and a story where every decision could mean the difference between life and death.”
