Out promoting Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, director James Gunn previously stated that he had to cut a character from the sequel. At the time, Gunn refused to reveal who this mystery character was. in an interview earlier today, Gunn finally fessed-up to who was the major cut from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
Today, James Gunn told Slashfilm that he was forced to cut Adam Warlock from the Guardians sequel, because the film was too cluttered:
“I love Adam Warlock. He’s one of my favorite characters. In all truth, I wrote an early treatment where I had Adam Warlock as a part…this is your big scoop because I don’t think I’ve told anybody this… It was Adam Warlock.
He was a big part of the screenplay and I realized it was one character too many. And I adored the character. I adored what we had done with him. I think we did something really creative and unique with Adam Warlock. But it was one character too many and I didn’t want to lose Mantis and Mantis was more organically part of the movie anyway. So I decided to save him for later.”
This would instantly lead Marvel fans to assume that Warlock will first appear in Avengers: Infinity War movie at some point, but Gunn points out that Warlock will not show up in the two-part film:
“He’s not. He’s not in Infinity War. But he will be a part of the future Marvel cosmic universe and a pretty important part of that… if he appears anywhere in the future, it’ll be in Guardians”
Any fan would know that this means that Infinity War will stray a bit from its comic book roots. Fans speculate that Adam Warlock is part of the Collector’s Collection, and that his cocoon was seen in the first film. Gunn previously shot down this notion, but Warlock’s inclusion in drafts of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 could mean that it was him all along.
Adam Warlock is an artificial human who escapes from the scientists that created him and travels into space. In the Infinity War comics, Warlock is a key player in defeating Thanos, and was trapped in the Soul Gem. The Infinity Stone that some believe is hidden inside of Heimdall on Asgard.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hits theaters on May 5.
