Warner Brothers is well on the way to creating the DC Cinematic Universe. Kicking off with Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Warner Bros. has hired James Wan to direct the stand-alone Aquaman movie, featuring Jason Momoa as the King of the Seven Seas. Aquaman is a hero that has become the biggest joke in the DC universe, but he shouldn’t be. He is one of the only heroes that can go toe-to-toe with, and whose power equals Superman and Wonder Woman.
Fans have clamored for any information about the King of Atlantis’ big screen début. In a recent interview with MTV News, James Wan spoke about how the hero will fit into the film universe, Justice League, and how he got the studio to buy into his ideas:
“A big part of it was me telling them what potential I saw in this character. As we all know, Aquaman is somewhat the butt of the joke in the superhero world. There’s something cool about that. I love the idea of being the underdog, coming in with a take on this underdog character and completely blow people’s expectations away. Like, ‘Oh, you thought he was going to be a wimpy character? No no no.’ It’s going to be so cool.
There’s Justice League that happens before it, so I have to be respectful to that but in a lot of ways… it’s a continuation but there are origin elements as well – and that’s the story that I’m excited to tell.”
Justice League began filming last week in the UK, and Momoa’s Aquaman is set to be different than anything we have ever seen. Momoa has begun a rigorous workout to shape up to play the King of Atlantis. Momoa will star in Justice League along with fellow League members Ezra Miller, Ray Fisher, Gal Gadot, Ben Affleck, and Henry Cavill.
Justice League is set for November 17, 2017, with Aquaman hitting theaters in July 27, 2018.
