Rumors of a potential sequel to the classic 1990s Batman: The Animated Series in development at HBO Max began circling the internet earlier this week.
The original series aired from 1992-95, and was praised for its storytelling, essentially beginning the DC animated universe. The series redefined characterization in animated media, creating definitive takes on Two-Face, Mr. Freeze, and Mark Hamill’s Joker.
Director Kevin Smith let the rumor slip on his Fatman Beyond podcast, claiming that the rumor comes from extremely reliable sources:
“I think that’s real. I don’t think that’s a rumor, I wouldn’t say ‘Set your watch to it,’ but it’s an idea whose time is not only coming, It came, and it’s smoking a cigarette.
It’s gonna happen. How f–king amazing would that be because you can just literally pick up and keep going. It’s not like, -oh we gotta explain why everyone’s older,’ it’s f–king animation man so you can go right back to those amazing f–king stories.”
After the success of the Harley Quinn animated series, this is a big no-brainer for HBO Max and DC. Smith is right, without having to worry about again actors, this is a very doable move.
Bruce Timm and Eric Radomski, and Paul Dini headed the original series. Radomski and Dini both work for Marvel animation at the moment.
