Why We Saw Batman’s Parents Die Again in ‘Batman v Superman’
Batman v Superman hit the ground running, and at the end of its second weekend has made $682.9 million. These are not horrible numbers, but with a steep price tag, there are a few that are wondering if the film will make a profit. Previous estimates said that the film needs to make between $800 million and $1 billion dollars to see a profit. There is little doubt that the film will hit the $800 million mark, but with the big drop that the film saw this weekend, some doubt it will hit $1 billion dollars.
There are a number of reasons for the drop, with the biggest reason being that the film is getting mediocre reviews. Reaction to the film remains a popular topic, with the film’s big downfalls and Ben Affleck’s portrayal as the Dark Knight taking the top honors. Another hot issue with the film is Zack Snyder’s decision to film the Wayne murders again, during a flashback scene at the beginning of the film. This is a scene that has been used many times in most Batman films, and fans are already familiar with the scene.

Batman is Pivotal to the Script
Some are even asking why it was even done. Excluding the scene would have saved the film runtime and budget. Talking to Forbes, Zack Snyder said that they had debated including the scene in the film, but ultimately he felt that because the scene directly relates to the trigger that makes Batman stop his attempt to kill the Man of Steel. Snyder says:
“You know, they’re both born and live in a world where someone can care about them and mourn them, and they can love their mother. And that’s the cool thing, you know we spend so much time with the Martha-Clark relationship that I think it kind of pays off there.
You realize, oh, we needed that as viewers, so we could get to a moment with Batman where that moment with Martha resonates. Because we’ve lived on with Clark’s relationship with his mother, so that moment is like, ‘Wow, that’s ringing for me and I feel it.’
When we were shooting the title sequence, that whole idea about, ‘Do we really need to see the death of the Waynes again,’ is a big thing to take a shot at again. But you realize you need it, because it actually pays off. And I really wanted to do it all the way.”
Although the film has come under extreme scrutiny by fans, Snyder continues to defend all of his decisions. While the film was not great, it was far from a bad film. It is definitely entertaining and worth watching more than once.
