Ben Affleck Will Not Be the Director of Next ‘Batman’ Film

Ben Affleck has stepped down as the director of the stand-alone Batman film, and will stay with the project as producer and star. This was a move that was coming, after Affleck recently made comments inferring that film was a long way away from being ready to start preproduction. According to Affleck, the script was a long way from being acceptable at the time of the interview.

Affleck still want to portray the Dark Knight on-screen, but it seems as though Warner Bros. and Ben Affleck are not on the same page about the film. This may be a preliminary conclusion, but this is another instance where Warner Bros. is not allowing the filmmakers to make the best film they can, rather they are imposing their will. Unfortunately, this is a move that has not fared well for Warner Bros. and the DC movies so far. With Suicide Squad and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice not being well received by critical fans, the Batman film may be on the same trajectory. In a recent statement, Affleck said:

“There are certain characters who hold a special place in the hearts of millions, performing this role demands focus, passion and the very best performance I can give. It has become clear that I cannot do both jobs to the level they require. Together with the studio, I have decided to find a partner in a director who will collaborate with me on this massive film. I am still in this, and we are making it, but we are currently looking for a director. I remain extremely committed to this project, and look forward to bringing this to life for fans around the world.”

The search will now begin for a suitable director for the film. Warner Bros. released a statement saying:

“Warner Bros. fully supports Ben Affleck’s decision and remains committed to working with him to bring a standalone Batman picture to life.”

Affleck recently completed shooting for Justice League, the big DC team-up movie. He will soon begin preparation on the stand-alone Batman film. The script was co-written by Affleck and Geoff Johns. Affleck is apparently relinquishing his role as director of the film to focus solely on his portrayal of the Caped Crusader. Affleck first appeared as The Dark Knight last year, in Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

He will reprise his role when the world needs DC Finest for Justice League on November 17.
