‘Black Adam’ – First Trailer Released

Black Adam is a long time coming. Dwayne Johnson was officially announced as taking on the character in 2014. To put that into perspective, it was a year AFTER the release of Man of Steel. Since then fans have wondered how Dwayne Johnson will fair as the man in black. Well, that wait is nearly over. Black Adam arrives in theatres this October. It’s time for the hierarchy of the DC universe to change.

The movie sees Juame Collet-Serra in the director’s chair with a script by Adam Sztykiel, Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani. Meanwhile, Pierce Brosnan, Aldis Hodge, Noah Centineo and Quintessa Swindell are portraying members of the Justice Society of America.

Take a look at the first trailer below:

There’s not much to unpack from this trailer in terms of story or villain. Details on who Black Adam, along with the JSA, is facing. Rumors suggest it’s a CGI villain, which wouldn’t be surprising. Given Black Adam starts out as a villain before becoming an anti-hero, there’s also a hope he’ll have a villainous turn at some point. Although it’s rare we see Dwayne Johnson playing a villain these days. It also seems like it includes flashbacks to Teth Adam before the wizard Shazam gives him his power.

We get a good look at some of the costumes for the movie. Aldis Hodge’s Hawkman looks incredible, and a far cry from the outfits used in DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. Pierce Brosnan as Doctor Fate is excellent casting. Hearing the suit was going to be mostly CGI gave me Green Lantern worries but the trailer has put that to rest. I don’t know much about Cyclone but I’m excited to see how Quintessa Swindell is as her and I already love her look. Finally, Noah Centineo’s Atom Smasher is as comic accurate as it can get. It looks slightly goofy but it’s a comic book movie – I’d be disappointed if it wasn’t.

We also see Sarah Shahi in the trailer. She’s playing Adrianna Tomaz but comic book fans know her as Isis. Tala Ashe portrayed a version of the character in DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. However, due to real-world issues, her character was altered and didn’t have a codename. As a fan of Zari, I can’t wait to see what Sarah Shahi does with Adrianna.

Speaking of the CW, according to the cast listing on IMDb, a fan favorite in the Arrowverse is jumping to the big screen. Patrick Sabongui who plays David Singh in The Flash is going to be in Black Adam too. He’s always a welcome addition.

The purpose of a trailer is to whet the appetite and I can say Black Adam’s done that for me. Hopefully, the next one divulges more details. Until then, at least we have this first look that showcases some breathtaking visuals and costumes.

Black Adam opens in theatres on the 21st of October 2022.
