One thing that has remained a mystery for Marvel is what will come after Avengers Infinity War Pt 1&2. Marvel’s whole cinematic universe has been scheduled out for a while, all the way through Infinity War, but what comes next? Where will the studio go in Phase 4? Will we get a plethora of team-up movies, or will we start to see more of their second tier heroes? Could they recycle their television heroes for the big screen, or are they waiting to buy back properties owned by other studios? This is a shroud that sits in the near future for Marvel.
If you asked me, I would say that in Phase 4 Marvel will take the opportunity to reflect on the other 3 phases, and will possible climax with the storyline from Avengers: Under Siege or will look to bring the Kree-Skrull War to the big screen. I am willing to hedge my bets with Under Siege, just for the fact that Baron Zemo will be coming to the MCU in Captain America: Civil War. It is even believed that he is the villain of the film, but early reviews say that the villain does not play that big of a role.
Joe Russo, director of Captain America: Civil War, recently shed some light on the mindset of the studio moving past Infinity War, in an interview with EW. He was responding to comments that Kevin Feige made last week, saying that Phase 4 will be “very different.” Russo says:
“You build things up and people enjoy the experiences you’ve built up. But then you kind of reach an apex or you reach a climax, a moment where you go, ‘This structure is really going to start to be repetitious if we do this again, so what do we do now?’ So now, you deconstruct it. We’re in the deconstruction phase with ‘Civil War’ and leading into ‘Infinity War,’ which are the culmination films.”
Everyone at Marvel is tight-lipped for now, but it seems that the studio is only picking up steam. You can bet that Phase 4 will bring a few new heroes to love, and a great mix of familiar and unfamiliar stories.
Captain America: Civil War hits theaters on May 6.
