Wednesday is new comic book day; over 150 brand new comic books will hit the shelves. For old comic fans and new ones, it can be overwhelming to figure out what issues to buy. I’m here to help and give a few recommendations of some of the comics worth picking up this week.
Secret Empire #0
written by Nick Spencer and drawn by Daniel Acuna
This issue will kick off the next giant event in Marvel comics. I’ve already talked about it a bit more in-depth but this is where anyone can jump on board before the Marvel world gets turned upside down. The Hydra-brainwashed Captain America has set his master plan in motion for almost a year now, and this is where he takes his first steps into the light as a true agent of Hydra. The heroes of the Marvel universe will be faced with the betrayal of their most trusted ally, and they all will be tested as Hydra reaches out in a power grab to take control of the world.
Batman #21
written by Tom King and drawn by Jason Fabok
This is the beginning of whole new story that will crossover with the Flash series. This is part one of The Button. The Dark Knight and The Fastest Man Alive are teaming up to solve the ultimate mystery in the DC universe. DC has promised to bring back Alan Moore’s The Watchmen, incorporating them into the main DC world, and this is how it begins. It’s the start of the unraveling of a mystery that will ultimately explain how the Watchmen have influenced the world of DC heroes.
Invincible Iron-Man #6
written by Brian Michael Bendis and drawn by Stefano Caselli
There is a brand new Iron Man in the skies, and it’s a woman. Technically, she goes by IronHeart but the book is still called the Invincible Iron Man. College student Riri Williams has taken on the iron mantle, and she’s still learning the heroic ropes. This issue is the start of a brand new storyline where her adventures have gone viral, and everyone wants to know who the new Iron Man is. There will also be a brand new addition to the Iron Man’s rogues gallery.
Batwoman #2
written by Marguerite Bennet and drawn by Steve Epting
It is not too late to jump into this new Batwoman series. We are learning more about her mysterious back story while Batwoman (Kate Kane) delves into her past connections to hunt down a deadly new bio-weapon before it falls into the wrong hands. Kate must take on the unbeatable assassin known as the ‘Knife’.
Roughneck
written and drawn by Jeff Lemire
In case you don’t feel like spending your hard-earned cash on just some single issues and you’d rather pick up a complete story in graphic novel format, I have a recommendation for you. Jeff Lemire is a New York Times-bestselling author and award-winning comic creator. Roughneck is an original tale about a brother and sister who must face their disturbing history. Derek, a failed former hockey player, now lives in the secluded northern community where he grew up. His long-lost sister Beth shows up, on the run from an abusive boyfriend, and the two escape to a hunting camp in the woods. They reconnect with each other and try to find a way to heal. Beth’s ex-boyfriend isn’t done with her. As he gets closer, he threatens to shatter this new-found peace that Derek and Beth have found.
