Wednesday is new comic book day and it’s never easy to pick out what comic books are worth picking up. Here are some recommendations to help you out.
Saga #44
written by Brian K. Vaughn & and drawn by Fiona Staples
There’s hardly been anything released about most of the issues of Saga. This book really sells itself. The last issue began to deal with the miscarriage of Marko and Alana’s second child in the way that only this comic could. The only thing known about this issue is that this unusual family unit is now looking for affordable and reasonable healthcare. If that sounds like a bummer or uninteresting, then you’ve never seen a page of Fiona Staple’s work on Saga. I cannot think of any other comic book that deals with real life and its eccentricities like Saga does. There really isn’t anything else like it on shelves today.
Wonder Woman #25
written by Greg Rucka and drawn by Liam Sharp
This is the finale issue of Greg Rucka’s recent run on Wonder Woman. This is the comic book that brought him back to DC comics after a long time away, and he has had made the most of his return. This book will pull together all the strings from various storylines since Wonder Woman’s re-entry into the DC Universe after Rebirth. The team taking over this book have some big shoes to fill. Rucka’s main goal with this relaunch of Diana’s story, was to establish a new and more coherent origin story for the heroine that will set her up for all the stories to come in the next few years. If you liked the Wonder Woman movie, then you need to take a look at Greg Rucka’s run on this book.
Punisher #13
written by Becky Cloonan and drawn by Kris Anka
Becky Cloonan got a lot of attention when this book started as the first female writer to write a headlining solo Punisher series and she has continued to prove her pedigree. In this issue, Frank Castle returns to New York City for what promises to be a bloody reunion with the Big Apple. For a character that has been around as long as the Punisher has, it can be difficult to breathe new life into a long-standing character. Cloonan has shown that Frank Castle is not done finding new crusades against criminals and the underworld that fears the Punisher.
Secret Empire #5
written by Nick Spencer and drawn by Leinil Francis Yu
We have reached the halfway point of the Marvel comic book event Secret Empire. We’ve seen the death and/or capture of major characters. They have also shown us just how far the newly crowned Hydra is willing to go to secure control of America. This latest issue promises to unleash a wholly new and powerful threat onto the rebel heroes still standing against Captain America and his Hydra forces. If the previous issues have shown us anything, then we already know that things can always get worse. The halfway point in this story seems like the best place for things to get as dark as they could be.
Ghost Rider: Four on the Floor TPB Vol. 1
written by Felipe Smith and drawn by Danilo Beyruth
Fresh off of his debut on Marvel’s Agents of Shield, Robbie Reyes is back in his own comic book series as the demonic spirit of vengeance. This new story sets him up to take-on/team-up with Marvel heroes from all over the world. They include: Amadeus Cho (The Totally Awesome Hulk), Wolverine, Silk and the comic book version of the Agents of Shield. A mysterious object crash lands in Southern California. It’s up to Robbie Reyes (with some help from his new friends) to figure out exactly what it is. This Ghost Rider relaunch basically only happened because of his appearance in the Shield TV show, but it truly establishes him as the new Ghost Rider in the Marvel Universe.
