Wednesday is new comic book day folks, and it’s time for some recommendations to help you out.
Spider-Gwen #19
written by Jason Latour and drawn by Robbi Rodriguez
Spider-Gwen quickly became one of the best smaller comic series of the last couple years. They have been lucky enough to maintain the same creative team ever since the series’ inception. Spider-Gwen takes place in its own corner of the Marvel Universe, with its own versions of our favorite heroes. #19 is the beginning of a whole new storyline and a great jumping-on point. The Spider-Gwen universe’s version of Matt Murdock is New York’s Kingpin of crime and the leader of the Hand. Gwen Stacy is trapped in the service of Murdock and he gives a new mission that promises to test her loyalties. This one promises to hit very close to home.
Batman #22
written by Tom King and drawn by Jason Fabok (Spoiler Alert!)
The Button part three! It all started in the last Batman issue, crossed over with The Flash comic, and continues here. Batman and Barry Allen have pursued the mystery behind the Comedian’s bloody button and the appearance of the Reverse Flash. In the last issue, they hopped on the Flash’s time-traveling treadmill for a trip into the Speed Force. They ended somewhere unexpected with a special surprise guest: Thomas Wayne. Bruce Wayne’s father and the Batman from the Flashpoint Universe that Barry Allen once mistakenly created. Now the World’s Greatest Detective and The Fastest Man Alive are joined by the Dark Knight from a forgotten world to solve DC Comics newest greatest mystery. Where will it lead? You’ll have to pick this one up to find out.
All-New Guardians of the Galaxy #1
written by Gerry Duggan and drawn by Aaron Kuder
The Brian Michael Bendis era of the Guardians of the Galaxy has come to an end and the torch has been passed to Deadpool and Nova comic writer, Gerry Duggan. We kick off with the fan-favorite team about to attempt their biggest heist ever. The Nova Peacekeepers are hot on their trail and the Guardians are about to stumble into a galactic war between cosmic beings, the Collector and the Grandmaster. This brand new chapter promises to be an adventure unlike anything we’ve seen before from our Guardians of the Galaxy.
Secret Empire #1
written by Nick Spencer and drawn by Steve McNiven
It’s become common practice for big comic book events to start with a 0 number issue to set the stage before the series really gets going. Secret Empire #0 did much more than that, it was really the beginning of this whole event and will enable the ‘first’ issue to actually just hit the ground running. We now know thanks to the Marvel Legacy event later this fall that Steve Rogers Captain America will be returning to his American patriotic roots at some point, but until he does this is the story of his fall from grace. Steve Rogers has revealed himself to the world as an agent of Hydra. He has enacted his master plan, and the super hero resistance begins here and now.
Eternal Empire #1
written by Sara Vaughn and drawn by Jonathan Luna
Sara Vaughn and Jonathan Luna are re-teaming for this Image comic series about a whole new fantasy epic tale. There is a universe called Saia where a war has been raging for over a century led by the Eternal Empress. Now, a young woman begins having visions that could change the course of the war and the fate of everyone in it. This is an exciting new series from an established dynamic duo and definitely worth checking out.
Superwoman Vol. 1: Who Killed Superwoman
written and drawn by Phil Jimenez
Once again, for those who might want a collected story instead of a single weekly tale, I would recommend the first volume of Phil Jimenez’s Superwoman series. This new series tells the tale of Lois Lane and Lana Lang. They were there when their Superman died and have inherited alternate versions of his powers. The two women soon discover that these new powers are slowly killing them, but they have no idea how to stop it. They pair together to protect the world as Superwomen and try to stop the all new villain, Ultra-Woman. This volume collects #1-#7 of Superwoman.
