There are a lot of questions about the Marvel Cinematic Universe moving forward after Avengers 4. Avengers: Infinity War has already devastated the MCU, and Avengers 4 looks to continue that trend, shaking up a very stable catalog of characters. Marvel is poised to either make or break their throne when the Thanos saga plays out next Spring. Could Marvel tap their oldest characters to breathe new life into Phase 4?
According to a new statement by Disney CEO Bob Iger, Marvel is eyeing “a new franchise beyond Avengers“. The studio will have its work cut out for them. The “Big Marvel Shakeup” is already being felt by fans. Could Iger be referring to bringing The Eternals into the MCU, something that Kevin Feige previously mentioned as well? We meet on a regular basis with our Marvel team, and we’ve plotted out Marvel movies that will take us well into the next decade. I’m guessing we will try our hand at what I’ll call a new franchise beyond Avengers, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you won’t see more Avengers down the road. We just haven’t made any announcements about that.
Given the popularity of the characters and given the popularity of the franchise, I don’t think people should conclude there will never be another Avengers movie.
It would be a move that would mirror their approach at introducing the MCU to the Guardians of the Galaxy. They were a fairly underground comic franchise (and one that a lot of people have never heard of) before the films. We all know how well that worked out for Marvel.
Marvel still has a lot on their plate with Avengers 4, Captain Marvel, Ant-Man and the Wasp, and Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 still on the horizon. The safe bet is for Marvel to move forward with bringing the Secret Wars storyline to the big screen. The introduction of Captain Marvel to the MCU is the perfect opportunity for it.
