This is the Crazy Way That Marvel Protects Their Coveted Top Secret Timeline

Avengers 4, Marvel Studios

Marvel has taken themselves from the verge of bankruptcy to a film powerhouse. It is almost a story that is too good to be true. Fast forward almost a decade, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe is practically untouchable. Not everyone is a fan of the system that the MCU uses. Regardless of the criticisms, Marvel continues to churn out hit-after-hit. One reason for this is the studio has a plan, more importantly, they have a secret timeline.

Yes, the studio does give directors creative freedom when making their films, but only as long as actions fall where they need to on the timeline. Marvel is no stranger to keeping secrets, they keep some of the most-guarded secrets in Hollywood, in a way that only a comic book-based studio can. According to a recent statement by Spider-man: Homecoming director Jon Watts, the timeline is Marvel’s Holy Grail. It holds all of the detail about every character, how they fit into the universe, and dictates anything that can and will happen.

Watts is out doing press rounds for Spider-Man: Homecoming, when he revealed a few details about the sacred scroll to EW:

There’s an actual scroll that they unrolled for me. One of my producers, Eric Carroll, it was his first job at Marvel to work on a timeline and see where things line up and see where things didn’t quite line up. Like, ‘Oh, that’s when Captain America is born.’

It is something straight out of Indianan Jones, and a secret I didn’t expect from the MCU. Can you blame them? They have to keep every little detail, every crossover, every cameo under tight lock-and-key, to keep wow-ing audiences. This is another reason that Marvel doesn’t give any of their actors full scripts.

As Phase Three hits its final stages, the secrets and twists will only get bigger. The events that will happen between now and (the yet untitled) Avengers 4 will change everything about the MCU that we know today. Some characters we love will die, some will ascend, and (if the comics are any indication) some will resurrect. This is why there has yet to be any film title announcements past Phase Three’s conclusion, except the Homecoming sequel.
