Support for the David Ayer cut of Suicide Squad is growing after news hit that HBO Max will #ReleasetheSnydercut in 2020. The announcement fueled a new movement to release the AyerCut of Suicide Squad as well. .
The Suicide Squad film famously dealt with studio interference throughout production. After Ayer turned in his cut, the studio fired him and allowed a trailer company the opportunity to recut the film.
This retooling changed the entire feel and tone of the film.
The 2016 film saw financial success but was crucified by critical reviews and fan reception. Ayer spoke out after the film launched stating that the theatrical cut of the film wasn’t his vision. The unique thing about the AyerCut cut is that it’s essentially complete.
Ayer went on Twitter to talk about his cut of the film and how much work it still needs
“My cut would be easy to complete. It would be incredibly cathartic for me. It’s exhausting getting your ass kicked for a film that got the ‘Edward Scissorhands’ treatment. The film I made has never been seen.”
Ayers cut of the film was a lot darker than the theatrical cut and features a better opening and a ton more Jared Leto Joker scenes. Ayer recently said that Diablo’s backstory about killing his family’s the only big idea he had from the film that survived the final cut.
There’s no word whether the AyerCut sees the light of day, Warners and HBO Max have yet to comment.
Although Jared Leto’s Joker is less than memorable, it would be nice to see more of this version of the character. Whether it is a good thing or not is an entirely different question all together.
