Review: ‘The Suicide Squad’ – James Gunn Strikes Again

The Suicide Squad is the latest live-action offering from DC. It’s directed by James Gunn, a guy who is no stranger to the Comic Book world. After giving Marvel fans Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 1 and 2, he’s fulfilling the dreams of DC fans.

The film brings Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Viola Davis and Jai Courtney from Suicide Squad back. It also introduces a slew of new characters such as Bloodsport, the Thinker and Savant.

In James Gunn’s own reverent style, he takes characters who seem unadaptable and forces you to care about them. Believe me, by the time the end of the credits, you’ll have felt every emotion you’re capable of with each character.

In The Suicide Squad, Amanda Waller dispatches supervillains to Corto Maltese in order to stop Project Starfish. Anyone who’s seen the trailer already knows what that is, and who the villain is. It’s safe to say they’re pretty creepy, along with Peter Capaldi’s The Thinker.

However, the scariest thing about The Suicide Squad is actually Amanda Waller. Viola Davis turns in a terrifying performance as the ruthless Government official who might be just as, or even more, villainous than those she locks up.

The Suicide Squad consists of some big names from Sylvester Stallone, Idris Elba, Peter Capaldi, and John Cena, who everyone knows are great at what they do. However, there are others who aren’t as well known who deserve more recognition.

The first is David Dastmalchian. Comic book fans know him from Ant-Man, The Dark Knight, Gotham and The Flash but outside of that world, he isn’t as big as he deserves to be. Time and time again David delivers performances ranging from comedic to dramatic. It’s in playing Abner Krill where he brings it together.

A character like Polka-Dot Man could have been over-the-top and goofy, but not this version. While he has his comedic moments, Abner’s fragility is expertly portrayed by David and he makes the viewer root for a character whose power is shooting polka-dots.

The second is for the person who made me fall in love with their character. Daniela Melchior is a relatively unknown actor but if The Suicide Squad is anything to go by, she won’t be for long. She portrays Cleo Cazo, also known as Ratcatcher 2.

It’s a tall order commanding a screen among so many established actors, especially ones who are awards winners. Yet, Daniela is more than up for the challenge, turning in several tearjerker moments.

As someone who expected to come out of the movie gushing over Harley like usual, I was pleasantly surprised when it turned out to be Ratcatcher 2. That is down to Daniela Melchior’s performance and I can’t wait to see what she does next.

If you’re on the fence, I implore you to watch The Suicide Squad if you can. It’s James Gunn’s finest hour and not only one of the best DC movies, but one of the best comic book movies ever made.

The villains might be dying to save the world, but you’ll be dying to see it again.

The Suicide Squad releases in the US on August 5 for theaters and August 6 on HBO Max.
