Lionsgate’s reboot of Hellboy has had a troubled road. Despite rumored trouble behind the scenes, the film had promise. The film was touted as being close to the source material, but the finished Hellboy reboot is far from it.

Unfortunately, Hellboy was a critical and commercial disaster. The film received the worst reviews of the year for a major release. After just a five-week-run, the film hauled in only $40 million with a $50 million budget.

The on-set issues between David Harbour and the film’s director Neil Marshall and the producers added to the mess during post-production.

Marshall allegedly was kicked out of the editing room before he made his final cut of the film.

Guillermo del Toro had two great Hellboy films, but neither did well at the box office. This might be the end of Hellboy‘s chances for a successful film franchise.

In a recent interview with Digital Spy, the film’s star David Harbour thinks critics were too harsh on the film:

“We did our best, but there’s so many voices that go into these things and they’re not always going to work out. I did what I could do and I feel proud of what I did, but ultimately I’m not in control of a lot of those things.

The problem that I have with comic book movies nowadays is that I think, and it’s a result of the power of Marvel stuff, it’s like chocolate, it’s a flavor.

And I sort of want a world where there’s more flavors than just comparisons to chocolate. So in that way when ‘Hellboy’ is viewed on the chocolate spectrum, it does very poorly.

That being said, it also has major problems. I think as a rental or as a movie that you see on an airplane, I think you’d be like, ‘Oh that was fun’ because it’s a fun movie, and I think it was unfairly bludgeoned as a result of these comparisons.”

Harbour was one of the few shining things about the film. There is no release date set for the film at this time.
