David S. Goyer Tapped to Pen a ‘Hellraiser’ Reboot

Spyglass Media Group just hired David S. Goyer (Batman v Superman) to produce and write the story for a Hellraiser reboot. The reboot aims at a “loyal, yet evolved reimagining” of the original 1987 classic horror film from Clive Barker.

In the original film, a mysterious puzzle box opens a portal to Hell, unleashing the Cenobites led by the infamous Pinhead.

According to a statement from Goyer:

“I’ve been a fan of Clive’s work since the original Books of Blood paperbacks and The Hellbound Heart novella. Having the chance to reimagine Pinhead and the Cenobites for a new audience is a nightmare-come-true.

Gary [Barber, CEO of Spyglass] is a true fan as well and we’re committed to making something dark and visceral.”

Many attempts to reboot the Hellraiser franchise died in the early stages, but this might be the most-promising attempt yet. According to the press release, Spyglass will “finance, develop and fast track the film for worldwide theatrical distribution.”

The first film follows the deviant life of Frank (Sean Chapman) who accidentally opens up a portal to Hell when he solves a mysterious puzzle box. Through the portal come the Cenobites, led by Pinhead. The Cenobites tear Frank’s body apart.

Relative move into Frank’s house and inadvertently bring him back to life. Frank convinces his brother’s wife to bring him bodies so he may feed and be restored to his former glory.

Meanwhile, the Cenobites demand blood and seek out to bring Frank back to Hell.

Hellraiser is a dark franchise that brought the world of BDSM into the foreground. The early films don’t stand the test of time, but the overarching horror themes will translate well.

There is plenty to mine from this franchise. Hopefully, Goyer’s script will see the light of day.

There are 10 films in the Hellraiser franchise.
