Director Neill Blomkamp confirms that he, Sharlto Copleym and Terri Tatchell are working on the script for District 10. 10‘s the official sequel to 2009s hit alien movie District 9.
The film remains South Africa’s biggest box office hit, grossing @211 million worldwide and nabbing four Academy Award nominations. Blomkamp confirmed the news in a tweet:
“District 10 screenplay also being written by @sharlto (Sharlto Copley) @territachell (Terri Tatchell) and I. It’s [sic] coming…”.
The long-awaited sequel’s finally coming to fruition after making the round for over a decade in Hollywood rumor mill circles. District 9 was a fresh look at an oversaturated sci-fi genre.
With its unique approach to an alien invasion that parallels refugees fleeing their own country, District 9 was definitely ahead of its time.
The film’s shot with a shaky-cam documentary style, that only helps fuel the narrative as Copley’s Wikus van de Merwe tries to prep the alien refugees (prawns) for relocation.
When rewatching the film today, the viewer can’t help but draw similarities between the South American exodus into the U.S. or the flood of Middle Eastern refugees escaping the perils of war-torn countries.
Blomkamp recently shot the horror film Demonic which just started screening. The director had another film in the chute, Inferno (starring Taylor Kitsch), but COVID-19 put that film on hold.
