Evolution of the Joker: The Most Iconic Villain in History

The Dark Knight, Warner Bros. Pictures, DC

The Joker is the best villain ever portrayed in comics, on television, and film in all of history. He has taken on many roles: from petty thief to bank robber, from crowbar wielding madman to dancing with the Devil by the pale moonlight. He has tested fate, beaten sidekicks, and eluded death many times. He is The Man with the Pale Face, The Jokester, Mr. J, and he wears purple better than Steve Harvey. So, how do you honor the many people who have portrayed this iconic character throughout time, while honoring the man himself, The Joker?

He has been voiced and portrayed by all sorts of Hollywood talent, but who was the best one. What happens when you put every Joker up against each other? Who rises to the top? Is it Cesar Romero as the class act, or Jared Leto and his tattoos? Does Heath Ledger’s dark, calculated madman beat out Jack Nicholson’s nefarious ways? Who can forget Mark Hamill, who has been the voice of the Joker since 1992, and holds the torch in the animated versions of Joker.

There is no real way to solve this argument, without splitting a few hairs, although some are welcome to try. ScreenRant is up to the task with their latest video, The Amazing Evolution of The Joker Throughout History. In the video, they hope to finally solve this age-old debate about which one is best.

Ok, I get that ScreenRant never really answered the question: Who is the best Joker? Although this is a heavy task to take on, it seems that may ComicBookResources figured it out, or did they?

I think that this animation nails the way that most fans feel about Jared Leto’s version of the Joker. I really am apprehensive about this version, but we will have to wait until Suicide Squad hits theaters on August 5.
