It is a rumor that’s circled the internet for a long time. Ewan McGregor is returning to the Star Wars universe as the Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi…maybe. The news isn’t official yet, but reports suggest the announcement will come at D23 next week.
According to an earlier report from Cinelinx, McGregor signed a deal with Lucasfilm to reprise the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi. Sir Alec Guinness initially portrayed the Jedi Knight in the franchise.
Another report from Deadline claims that McGregor will star in a new series for Disney+ focusing on Kenobi. Speculation claims the series takes place between the events of Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope.
Basically, the young Obi-Wan watches over baby Luke Skywalker, keeping him safe to reclaim from Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader and the Empire.
This marks the third official Star Wars series for the Disney+ streaming service. The first show, Jon Favreau’s The Mandalorian hits the service at launch this November. The second show is a prequel series starring Diego Luna’s and Alan Tudyk from Rogue One as Cassian Andor and K-2SO.
Disney will reveal more about its plans for Disney+ and more in this year’s D23 Expo taking place in Anaheim, California. There is a good chance that the Obi-Wan Kenobi series will be announced then.
