.With Avengers: Endgame in the rear-view window, where does Marvel go from here? The dynamic directing Russo’s depart the studio, with no planned return in sight. One storyline (Secret Wars) could bring them back.

The directing-duo helmed four of Marvel’s biggest films, but they need time off. Only a huge storyline would bring them back to the MCU. The Russo’s reaffirmed their stance to MTV News, and stated they really want to adapt the Secret Wars comic storyline:

“I keep saying Secret Wars ’cause that was one of the first books that I really fell in love with as a kid…this notion of event storytelling.

That’s part of the reason that we gravitate so strongly towards these event films and these ensemble films is that the notion that you can contain so many different characters, and so many different points of view, and galvanize them around a story point is really compelling to us.”

The twelve-issue crossover story pulls the Marvel heroes into an alternate dimension, Battleworld, by The Beyonder. He pits the Avengers, X-Men, Fantastic 4 & Spider-Man against some of their greatest foes. The winners would get their heart’s desires.

It’s a classic storyline, and one that along with Crisis on Infinite Earths established crossover events as a common comic strategy for publishers.

Outside of comments from the Russo’s, Marvel isn’t letting any secrets out of the bag. A Secret Wars film (or a number of films) would instantly hit big with MCU fans.

Marvel chief Kevin Feige’s well aware that seeing The Avengers, X-Men, and the Fantastic Four in the same film is something the fans want to see. Disney’s recent acquisition of Twentieth Century Fox gives Marvel the ability to use the X-Men and the Fantastic Four.
