George R.R. Martin Calls Stephen King Out

George R.R. Martin and Stephen King

What would you do when two writing giants have the opportunity to talk with each other about process and style? You sit down and enjoy the ride. In a recent event in Albuquerque, New Mexico, George R.R. Martin and Stephen King faced off and had an hour-long conversation. In a recently released video of the event, the two writing juggernauts faced-off, posing questions to each other, and giving the world a bit of insight into each of their writing.

The conversation is an interesting one, but one the best moments comes from the 50:08 mark, when George R.R. Martin asks Stephen King a very blunt question. He asks King how he writes “so many books, so fast”. It is a great moment, and shows you the writing dynamic between the two best-selling writers. Martin is famous for taking a very long time to finish his writing, showing that his process is a very meticulous one. If you don’t believe me, look at how long it took him to write A Song of Fire and Ice. King is a writing force, churning out novel after novel.

The Big Question…

The big question is completely worth watching the entire video for, and any writer reading should spend the time to check out the video. King answers Martin with directness: he writes, without regard to what will be cut from the finished novel, where George R.R. Martin writes and edits knowing nothing can be cut from his finished vision. It is a rare moment for a beginning writer to gain a bit of insight into the day-to-day lives of famous writers.
