Is it official, everyone involved with the all-female Ghostbusters reboot is giving up on the direction. The studio has a new sequel in the works from original director Ivan Reitman’s son Jason. The film is going to be scary and a direct sequel to the original films.
In an interview with 660 City News, Dan Aykroyd confirms that he’s also written a prequel to the original films, which would feature Peter, Ray, and Egon in high school:
“I’ve written Ghostbusters High where lthey meet in New Jersey in 1969 and we’re looking to do that as probably a glorified feature or pilot within the next maybe five years. And it would lead to a television project and I thought of [Jason Reitman] immediately for that. It’s on his desk but that’s years away from the current project.
But it’s a neat idea for a prequel. Imagine casting the three characters as teenagers. We have at least one or two other concepts for the Ghostbusters and then we’ll look at doing the prequel, which will be a perfect button on all we’ve done up to that point.”
A Ghostbusters prequel is an interesting idea. Setting the film during the high school years of the team, and showing how they fell in love with the idea of ghost busting could allow the franchise to grow additional legs.
