It is no secret now, fans are not happy with the way that the 2016 Ghostbusters reboot looks. The film has not hit theaters yet, but fans are already crying foul. How could the studio mess this up. This is a movie that should make a ton of money. The franchise is a treasure from the 1980s, and was such a fresh idea that it quickly became a hit. Was there really any chance to make the fans happy with a reboot? Yes, and it wouldn’t have taken much to get it there.
The all-girl reboot of Ghostbusters was supposed to be a strong enough film that it killed a Channing Tatum-led sequel. I haven’t seen the film yet, and could still be surprised, but my gut is telling me otherwise. Watching the trailers, I feel that it is a familiar world to me, but it has been commercialized and watered down. These are not the things I want from another Ghostbusters movie.

I want nostalgia, I want excitement. I want a new vision. Further the story, and usher in a new cast. Let me fall in love with the franchise all over again. These are the things that Hollywood seems to miss. It is yet another lazy reboot in a string of bad reboots. The jokes are bad, the humor is cheap, and the film just looks sad. Even the actresses in the trailers look like they are not even trying. This isn’t what we want. We want investment, especially in a franchise that has been loved for decades.
I would have rather the film continue the storyline and not reboot it, because you are saying that we need to throw away Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters 2. Why even have the actors from the original films do cameos? It seems pointless to me. LordRae over at Kinja has a lovely theory for a way that this movie should have gone. The theory was posted in their forum and finds a perfect way to continue the Ghostbusters story:
“I still maintain that if they wanted to do an all female Ghostbusters it should have been a continuation not a reboot. Essentially in the first movie they talked about how the “Franchising rights alone will make us millions”. So fast forward all these years later and who might need money? Venkman. Have him scam the girls and sell the Ghostbuster name and all the gear after they express an interest in it. He gives them the “Gear” as in all the 80’s gear and tech and they feel ripped off until they realize it works just not very well due to age. Que them updating it to modern tech and styling and you could have them show how interested they are in the paranormal and how smart they are to actually improve on these designs and do things the Ghostbusters couldn’t do originally.”
You could even take the idea further and have the girls seek out Ray Stantz (Dan Aykroyd) and Egon Spengler (Harold Ramis), who has since passed away. Ray talks to the girls and helps them update the tech. You can even have scenes where their technical prowess impresses him. This is the way that the sequel should be. It doesn’t cast away the older films, it acknowledges them, and tips its hat. I’t is perfect, and ushers in an all-female cast in a perfect way that pays homage to the previous cast members. It is an idea that is fresh, yet gives you the same nostalgia. You would have had moments for the two different types of humor to grow throughout the entire film.
This would have been the best way to give us, the fans, another Ghostbusters film/franchise. Instead we are left with the reality of the potential train wreck that we will all witness on July 15.
