Halloween 2021 Review #6 – James Gunn’s ‘Slither’

Slither is the next movie in my challenge. After five days of watching Friday the 13th movies, it’s nice to have a change of pace. It’s even better since Slither is the brainchild of James Gunn.

Yes, the same guy behind the Guardians of the Galaxy movies and The Suicide Squad.

The movie also stars Elizabeth Banks, Nathan Fillion, Michael Rooker, and a sneaky cameo from James himself. Eagle eye viewers will also notice Sean Gunn, James’ brother who is in the majority of his projects. Sean plays Kraglin in the MCU.

Slither tells the story of a malevolent alien parasite that invades a small town in South Carolina. The first person to become infected is Michael Rooker’s character, Grant. This happens when he’s close to cheating on his wife, Starla (Elizabeth Banks).

Whether this serves as a parable on morality I don’t know. However, that’s what I’m choosing to believe. The person doing wrong is the first to go.

From there, the parasite uses another as a breeder for its species while it also falls in love with Starla. By the third act, a small team band together to take it down. This team includes Starla, Bill Pardy (Nathan Fillion), and Kylie Strutemyer (Tania Saulnier).

Slither is a mixture of horror and comedy. While it didn’t do well at the Box Office, it was received well by critics and fans. Furthermore, it’s a cult classic.

If you’re easily grossed out, this might not be the movie for you. There are a few scenes, in particular, I’m thinking of. One of them sees an army of the parasites invading a house and taking over a family.

Slither is a disturbing horror comedy that has James Gunn’s signature all over it. If you’re looking for something different this Halloween, I recommend it.
