Fans eager for the return of The X-Files have received one of the biggest updates yet. Actor Himesh Patel has confirmed that production recently wrapped on the pilot episode for Ryan Coogler‘s long-awaited revival of the iconic science fiction series.

Patel discussed the project during a recent interview while promoting his latest work. He revealed that filming on the pilot has already concluded. Although he remained careful not to reveal story details, his comments confirm that the series has moved well beyond the development stage. It’s now progressing toward what could become one of television’s most anticipated reboots.

The reboot features Patel and Danielle Deadwyler as the new leads. Although he says he was too young to enjoy the show, it did mean a lot to his mother:

“I think I was maybe three or so when it first started, so a little young to be watching it. I seem to remember my mom sort of telling me things, though. She would like to tell me stories about, ‘I watched a show, and this thing happened,’ and I’d be like, ‘It’s weird.’”

Patel goes on to confirm that Coogler’s show updates the premise to include contemporary issues:

“You really do come to understand the responsibility of it, and the power of it as a world. It’s obviously a contemporary show that I think is of its time. Ryan and his whole team and myself and Danielle were all very aligned in that way, that we love depth. We love everything to have a meaningful context, and, much the same as a lot of great filmmakers like Chris [Nolan], Ryan believes that the audience is intelligent.

And he wants to give them as much richness of tapestry as he can. So, yeah, hopefully people will see it.”

Ryan Coogler has been attached to the project for several years. Best known for directing Black PantherBlack Panther: Wakanda ForeverCreed, and Sinners, Coogler has repeatedly expressed his admiration for The X-Files. His involvement immediately generates excitement among longtime fans. How might a modern version of the paranormal drama look under his creative direction?

Rather than simply recreating the original series, Coogler appears to be developing a fresh take on the franchise. The new project’s described as both a revival and a semi-reboot. This suggests it will honor the mythology that made the original famous while introducing new characters and investigations for a new generation of viewers.

Patel’s casting also hints that the series is assembling an impressive ensemble. The actor has steadily built a reputation for delivering thoughtful and compelling performances in projects ranging from Yesterday to TenetStation Eleven, and The Assessment. While details surrounding his character remain under wraps, his involvement suggests Coogler continues to prioritize strong dramatic talent alongside the franchise’s signature mystery and suspense.

The original The X-Files premiered in 1993 and quickly became one of television’s defining science fiction dramas. The series follows FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully. They investigated unexplained phenomena, government conspiracies, alien encounters, and paranormal mysteries. Its blend of standalone “monster of the week” episodes and sprawling mythology helped shape modern genre television and influenced countless series that followed.

David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson became synonymous with the franchise through their portrayals of Mulder and Scully. Neither actor has been confirmed for Coogler’s new version. But Anderson previously expressed interest in speaking with the filmmaker about his vision. Whether familiar faces ultimately appear remains one of the biggest unanswered questions surrounding the project.

For now, the completion of the pilot represents an important milestone. Television pilots often undergo evaluation before a network or streaming service commits to a full season. Reaching this point indicates the project has gained significant momentum after years of speculation.

There is still no official premiere date, trailer, or announcement regarding a full series order. However, Patel’s update offers the clearest sign yet that Ryan Coogler’s vision for The X-Files is becoming a reality.

If the pilot delivers the same blend of suspense, mystery, and character-driven storytelling that made the original series a cultural phenomenon, The X-Files could once again have audiences asking whether the truth is still out there.
