13. Sleepaway Camp (1983)
At first glance, Sleepaway Camp appears to be a fairly standard summer camp slasher, with campers and counselors being picked off one by one by a mysterious killer.
However, the film takes a sharp left turn in its final moments, delivering one of the most shocking and controversial endings in horror history. The twist not only recontextualizes the entire movie but also sets Sleepaway Camp apart from its contemporaries.
The film’s depiction of bullying, teenage awkwardness, and its camp setting contribute to its overall sense of unease, and while some of the acting and dialogue veer into campy territory, this only adds to the film’s cult appeal.
The kills are inventive and gruesome, particularly the infamous curling iron death scene. Sleepaway Camp has spawned several sequels, but it’s the original’s shocking finale that continues to be discussed and debated by horror fans to this day.
