Hulu has reportedly turned down the pilot for the supernatural drama series Locke & Key. The streaming service has also passed on picking up to series the drama based on the Joe Hill horror comic of the same name.

In a recent interview with Cultured Vultures, actress Samantha Mathis spoke about upcoming roles on her schedule and revealed that she worked on the pilot. She went on to say that although Hulu didn’t pick up the series, it still might see the light of day:

“I did a pilot for Hulu called Locke & Key but it didn’t get picked up by Hulu. It’s getting shopped around to Amazon and Netflix and Apple and everyone right now. Who knows, maybe that will end up some place.”

Here is a quick synopsis of the story:

The story follows a woman who moves her three children to Maine after her husband is brutally murdered. They arrive at Keyhouse, an unlikely New England mansion with fantastic doors that transform all who dare to walk through them. It is also home to a hate-filled and relentless creature that will not rest until it forces open the most terrible door of them all.

This marks three failed adaptations of Locke & Key, and this was the second television pilot made for the series. FOX attempted to bring the horror comic to television in 2011 with a pilot directed by Mark Romanek (Never Let Me Go) and starring Miranda Otto, Nick Stahl, Jesse McCartney and Sarah Bolger.

In 2002 there was an attempted film trilogy of the franchise that also fell apart. This last pilot was directed by Andy Muschietti (IT) and starred Frances O’Connor, Owen Teague, Nate Corddry, Megan Charpentier and Jack Mulhern.

Maybe one day soon we will get the formula right, because Locke & Key is intense.
