In a pop announcement last month, it was said that Avengers director Joss Whedon is set to direct Batgirl for Warner Brothers Pictures and DC Films. In the past, Whedon wanted to direct a Wonder Woman film, but it was ultimately cancelled. Now the creator of Firefly finally gets his chance to break into the DC Cinematic Universe.
At the world première for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 last night, Variety asked Whedon about his approach to casting Batgirl will be. The project is still in the very early stages of development. Here is what Whedon said:
“I have so many things to say about her, I’m very excited to see a girl in the cowl. [Casting wise] I don’t have my eye on anybody. I’m creating this character, I’m in a dialogue with her and then we’ll see who joins that later on… I doubt it’ll be a name. I think this is somewhere where you go and find Batgirl and then you cast her. I’m not against movie stars, they’re great, but you need somebody who’s going to be just right, and a situation like this the name carries a lot of weight, so it’s not as critical.”
Batgirl will look to change the current downward spiral that DC Films have embraced, trading substance for convoluted plots and spectacle. Whedon is the right man for the job. Known for his ability to handle ensemble casts and write impeccable dialog, Whedon will have to bring his A game. With a little hope, Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman will take a lot of the pressure from DC. The film is garnering shining first reactions, but fan reception will have to wait until the film hits theaters on June 2.
The first cowl of Batgirl was worn by Barbara Gordon, daughter of Commissioner James Gordon. She first appeared in comics in 1967, and eventually teamed up with The Dark Knight and the Boy Wonder to fight the corruption in Gotham City. Toby Emmerich, Jon Berg and Geoff Johns will help Whedon with Batgirl for Warner Brothers.
