Marvel has finally confirmed a long standing rumor regarding Spider-Man: Homecoming. The rumor was that Michael Keaton (Batman [1989], Birdman) was cast to play the film’s villain, The Vulture. With other characters like The Tinkerer and The Shocker confirmed to be in the film, fans began to wonder who Keaton was playing. Could he be The Tinkerer? Is that him under the leaked set photos of The Shocker? Little was known, and next to nothing was confirmed by Marvel.
Marvel dropped concept art of The Vulture at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, and still there was no word who would play the titular villain. Marvel has finally confirmed that Michael Keaton is in fact playing The Vulture in Spider-Man: Homecoming. In an interview with the Toronto Sun, Kevin Feige (Marvel’s head honcho) quietly announces the role. Here is the statement that Feige gave:
We’ve had a wish list and most of them in the near-term are coming together. Cate Blanchett is playing Hela in Thor: Ragnarok. Michael Keaton’s Vulture in Spider-Man is something. And of course, finally, we’re showcasing Josh Brolin’s Thanos (in Avengers: Infinity War). We’re looking forward to that very much.
This brings up an interesting question: Which version of The Vulture will Marvel go with? The consensus believes that Keaton will play Adrian Toomes, the original Vulture. In Toomes comic iteration, he is an electrical engineer who builds a super suit. The suit gives Toomes the ability to fly partnered with super strength. When he is cheated by a partner and screwed by the justice system, Toomes turns to crime. It will be interesting to see how Marvel adapts the character on the big screen. With Keaton in the drivers’ seat, they will have the acting chops to do the character right.
We will see how it all looks when Keaton takes flight again in Spider-Man: Homecoming on July 7, 2017.
