One big question that Marvel is constantly getting is when is a solo Hulk film coming. (Yes, there are already two that exist, but we could use a ‘New Marvel’ version starring Mark Ruffalo.) Kevin Feige gets asked this question more than anyone. While he was out doing the rounds for Thor: Ragnarok Feige decided to update fans on the status of another big green stand-alone film.
Marvel might have acted on a Hulk film already, had it not been for the rights residing with Universal Pictures. In an interview with Indiewire, Feige says that talks of a stand-alone film have happened, but the likelihood of it happening are slim:
“I think that back and forth continues, and I don’t know if it will ever happen. But I will tell you, it makes me very, very happy going from a world, 10 years ago, when people were questioning the viability of Hulk in a standalone film, to getting asked every other interview, ‘When will there be another standalone Hulk?’”
Marvel has proven themselves to be the premiere studio when dealing with superhero films. After Sony decided to bring Marvel in to save their Spider-Man movies, some wonder why other studios aren’t following suit. Universal Pictures has two failed attempts at the Hulk and a recent failed attempt at creating a ‘Classic Monsters’ Cinematic Universe. Fox is also another studio who cannot seem to get the formula just right. They recently made a ghastly attempt at a Fantastic Four reboot.
Universal may eventually seek Marvel’s help. With Feige’s recent comments, it seems that the two studios are ar a crossroads. This means that Marvel will likely wait on another Hulk movie until the rights to the character revert back to them.
