One of the biggest criticisms of Marvel movies, are their weak villains. There are a few exceptions sprinkled throughout the MCU, more notably Alfred Molina’s Doc Ock, Hugo Weaving’s Red Skull, and Tom Hiddleston as Loki. The Spider-Man movie franchise has had its share of bad movie villains, with atrocious live-action versions of Venom, Electro, and The Sandman. Marvel’s main draw has been spectacle and seeing the heroes in action, unfortunately this means that the majority of their villains are either patsies or one-dimensional.
Spider-Man: Homecoming hopes to change that trend. Michael Keaton will be the film’s main villain, The Vulture. Out doing interviews for his new film The Founder, Keaton tells Variety that this version of The Vulture is far from a standard throwaway villain:
“Yeah, Vulture, recently. But not to give too much away, but interestingly, he is and he isn’t, that character. He’s a really interesting — and more interesting than I thought — villain because there’s parts of him that you go, ‘You know what? I might see his point.’ Really, really. It makes it interesting to play.”
Keaton goes on to talk about having to leave the film after originally committing to the role, due to scheduling conflicts. He ended up coming back to the role when the film changed shooting dates. did he hesitate to take on another superhero film?
“No, I mean, not at all. It’s just a thing. A gig. I don’t mean it’s just a gig, it’s the next job. And you think you can do it or want to do it and in fact I said no, because I couldn’t, it didn’t work in my schedule. Then I’m glad to say, they kind of shifted the scheduling and it worked out. So it fit in and I’m glad I did it.”
