Review – Millarworld’s ‘The Magic Order Vol 2 #2’

The Magic Order focuses on a secret organisation comprising of wizards. The previous issue reintroduces us to Cordelia Moonstone and The Magic Order. It also introduces us to the villains of the arc and keeps the theme of family running. However, the Korne family don’t have a connection to the Moonstones through blood. Instead, it’s the past where the Magic Order and the Korne family connect.

Just like before, The Magic Order Vol 2 #2 is written by Mark Millar with art by Stuart Immonen.

The Magic Order Vol 2 #2 moves the villain’s story along and shows why they’re a force not to be reckoned with. There’s a moment in the issue I had to read several times to make sure I didn’t imagine it. It’s some of the darkest writing Mark has done yet. To make matters worse for our protagonists, the Korne family are trying to team up with a warlock. With the inclusion of Zheng from the previous issue, the Magic Order look to be in deep trouble.

Fortunately for them, they’re adding to their team too. The issue introduces Francis, a recovering addict with past ties to Cordelia. The story wastes no time in showing his powers, which I’m sure will come in handy soon. If the writing continues this way, every issue will be better than the last.

Of course, we can’t talk about a comic without focusing on the art. Stuart Immonen’s art is spellbinding. The silhouette art style Stuart’s chosen to use conveys a feeling of unease. Thus, helping the readers connect with what the protagonists are feeling. It also serves to amp up the fear brought forth by the Korne family.

There’s a section that takes place on Big Ben and it’s one of my favorites. The panel doesn’t focus on Big Ben though, choosing to show London through a bird’s eye view. As there are two characters in the panel, it shows how intimate the moment is between the two.

The Magic Order Vol 2 #2 ends with a cliffhanger that not only leaves you wanting more but leaves you mortified. You’ll be able to see it for yourself Wednesday the 1st of December when it hits the shelves.
