Yesterday, Disney CEO Bob Chapnek announced that the live-action Mulan film will hit theaters and premier on Disney+ on September 4. Although the film hits Disney+, it’s a PVOD release, meaning it’ll cost $29.99 USD to watch it.
Instantly, fans took to social media calling the animation giant out for scalping movie prices. One big detail seemed to elude everyone. Was the price for a single viewing or for ownership of the film?
Seeking clarification, The Insider reached out to a Disney+ representative for the answers. According to the rep, the $29.99 isn’t a rental charge.
Subscribers who purchase Mulan will have “continuous access to the film for as long as they remain subscribers to the service.” Interestingly enough, this means that you bought the film, but only keep it as long as you keep Disney+.
In time, Mulan will drop on Disney+ free for everyone.
This marks the first time that a film could follow the same model that the video gaming industry uses, whereas payment gets you early access to DLC content, which eventually ends up dropping for free to the masses.
The film hits most active markets for Disney+ including the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and a number of Western European countries.
