Last year news broke that Neill Blomkamp was secretly working on an Alien movie idea that he would like to work on. He released a ton of concept artwork, and the project was greenlit. Everything was grand for a short period, then Ridley Scott announced that he has written one more movie for the Alien franchise, Alien: Covenant. This announcement instantly put Blomkamp’s project on hold, but according to Sigourney Weaver, there is a chance that the film will still get made.
Unfortunately, Ridley Scott’s recent Alien film Prometheus released to mixed reviews. To say the least, it was a pretty bad film. Most would have thought that Blomkamp’s project would just sit in production hell for all of time, until it gets forgotten. The artwork looked great, and the details would make for an interesting new take on the Alien universe. Recently, Sigourney Weaver recently commented on having read Blomkamp’s script, and that she hopes to still do something with it:
“Well, I *think* it is. Ridley asked Neill NOT to make our Alien until after Prometheus 2. He (Ridley) wanted his movie to shoot and be released first. But it’s an AMAZING script, and Neill and I are REALLY excited about doing it. We’re doing other things until we can get going on that. I’d be really surprised if we DIDN’T do it, because it’s such a great script, and we love working together. So, it’s just going to take a little bit longer to get out to you, but it’ll be worth the wait.”
If this film goes forward, it will have some very interesting ideas, and would breathe a breath of fresh air into this flailing franchise. It is a promising film. We can only hope that this film gets made.
