New ‘Star Wars’ projects announced, Taika Waititi directing

After Star Wars: The Rise of Sky fans were unsure of the franchise’s future. It seems we now have an answer. In celebration of May the Fourth, Lucasfilm has confirmed two new Star Wars projects.

The first project is the rumored Disney+ series run by Leslye Headland (Russian Doll). There’s no information on the series other than a rumor it’ll star a female protagonist.

It’s unclear if the character will be adapted from the source material or if she’ll be an original creation. Either way, the series joins The Mandalorian and the upcoming Cassian Andor Rogue One prequel series. On top of that, Ewan McGregor is still on track to return as Obi-Wan Kenobi.

It’s safe to say it’s an exciting time to be a Star Wars fan. However, if that doesn’t whet your appetite then here’s even more exciting news. The director of Thor: Ragnarok and Jojo Rabbit is in charge of a feature length Star Wars project.

You read that right. Taika Waititi is going to be directing a Star Wars movie, as well as co-writing it. Krysty Wilson-Cairns (1917) is joining him with co-writing the screenplay. Having the director of the best Thor movie and the writer of one of the best movies of 2019/2020 can only be a big win.

Taika is no stranger to the Star Wars universe. He directed Chapter 8 of The Mandalorian season one. He also provides the voice for the bounty hunting droid IG-11.

There’s no idea on when the movie releases or what, or who, it centers around. Hopefully, that information comes soon but only time will tell. Meanwhile, The Last Jedi’s Rian Johnson confirmed in January 2020 he is still in talks to bring his trilogy to life. With this, there’s no shortage of media from the galaxy far, far away.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is now streaming on Disney+, along with Star Wars: Resistance. They join the rest of the Star Wars movies and animated series available at launch.
