It’s Official, Peter Capaldi is Saying Farewell to ‘Doctor Who’

Doctor Who, BBC

It will soon be a sad day for fans of Doctor Who once again, as they have to bid adieu to yet another Doctor so soon. According to the announcement, Capaldi will depart the show after the 2017 Christmas Special. It is a sad day for fans of the series who dread every departure of the current Doctor, with a regeneration that ushers in the next actor/actress who will take the role.

You can see the BBC’s official announcement below via Twitter:

Although Capaldi is leaving the show this year, he insists that he is still dedicated to the role, through his departure. “I’m still Doctor Who!,” Capaldi said. “We’re doing epic stuff! I’m not done yet!” Capaldi took the role over for Matt Smith, but who the next Doctor could be is anyone’s guess.

Capaldi is the 12th incarnation of the Doctor, and has only been with the series since 2014. This year will bring us season 10 of the show, and it will mark his last episodes in the TARDIS. Capaldi will depart the show, along with showrunner Steven Moffat. Replacing Moffat is Broadchurch’s Chris Chibnall. Capaldi was asked to stay on the show through Moffat’s departure, but with the announcement of his departure, it is apparent that he declined the offer. You can read the official announcement below:

One of the greatest privileges of being Doctor Who is to see the world at its best. From our brilliant crew and creative team working for the best broadcaster on the planet, to the viewers and fans whose endless creativity, generosity and inclusiveness points to a brighter future ahead. I can’t thank everyone enough. It’s been cosmic.

Could we see a return of a few familiar faces, with this recent announcement? Maybe an Amy Pond and Rory appearance perhaps? It is doubtful, but would be a great dynamic. Say goodbye to the rock-n-roll magician, this season will be cherished, now more than ever.

The 10th season of Doctor Who will BBC One and BBC America this April.
