‘Only Murders in the Building’ Season 2 Retrospective

Who Mentioned the Scottish Play?

The Scottish play is, of course, Macbeth by William Shakespeare. In the theatre, it’s considered a curse to mention the play while rehearsing or performing. Considering what happens at the end of season 2, I can only assume someone says the name of the play (and I hope Oliver brings it up at least once). However, that’s not where the excitement stems. No, it’s the identity of the victim. Within the universe, we’ve never met Ben Glenroy before. He’s just an actor in a play directed by Oliver and co-starring Charles. Fans of Friends, Ant-Man, Clueless and countless other movies and TV shows will know the actor playing him though.

Only Murders in the Building adds yet another charming (and ageless) actor with Paul Rudd. Yes, you read that right. Paul freaking Rudd is the next victim. There’s not much to know about Ben right now, that’ll come in the next season. What we do know though is he did something Charles knows about and he threatens Ben to stay away from “her”. The identity of her is also unknown. If I was to guess I’d imagine it’s either Mabel, Lucy or even Lucy’s mother. Could Ben be Lucy’s mother’s new husband? Or does he have a relationship with Mabel?

Maybe it’s none of them and we haven’t met this her yet. His death is also interesting as, unlike the last two, he wasn’t shot or stabbed. Furthermore, Tim Kono and Bunny Folger’s killers at least had the decency to kill them in private. Whoever killed Ben wanted to make it a spectacle. Many actors dread ‘dying on stage’ but that normally means they mess up and ruin the play. For Ben, that expression takes on a literal meaning as blood spews from his mouth and he collapses.

Thankfully, that isn’t the last we’ll see of Paul Rudd as we have confirmation he’ll return in season 3. Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait until 2023 to find out who killed Ben Glenroy.

Only Murders in the Building season 2 had a lot riding on it after the success of the first season. For me, it elevated the series to new heights and I loved every moment. Here’s hoping season 3 does well and we get more of this wonderful series. To the cast and crew who work tirelessly on this series, thank you for giving us such a great series. The world would be a darker place without Only Murders in the Building.
