Review – Millarworld’s ‘The Magic Order 3 #2’

The Magic Order is a comic series created by Mark Millar and Olivier Coipel. Image Comics publishes it under the Millarworld label. At some point will be coming to Netflix as a live-action series. Until then, we’ve got the original comic series that shows no signs of stopping. The Magic Order 3 #2 takes the series in a slightly different direction. It reveals various answers that change what we thought we knew.

Each volume consists of art by a different artist. The first volume was Olivia Coipel with Stuart Immonen providing it for the second volume. This time around it’s Gigi Cavenago. The difference in the art is visible but they bring new life to each volume helping to make it feel like a new series.

In the previous issue, we were introduced to Sammy Liu as well as finding out the Matriach of the Moonstone family is alive. Furthermore, we saw Uncle Edgar remembering something from his past but we didn’t know what.

The Magic Order 3 #2 opens with a page that’ll make you glad you weren’t watching it with your parents if it was a TV show. It shows how the parents of the current Moonstone generation met. The issue also explains why Salome left the family. As a precog, she’s constantly telling everyone everything that’s going to happen and the last thing anyone wants on their ‘first date’ is to have their life mapped out.

There’s also a quiet sadness in Salome’s story. However, I’ll let you see why for yourself. Meanwhile, Cordelia travels to Singapore to investigate a string of disappearances. She realises an old truce is crumbling and it’s up to her (along with some friends) to put a stop to it. The sequence also uncovers a creepy (and disturbing) idea that makes the reader shiver.

This sets up a story between the head of the Magic Order and someone she doesn’t think is caring enough about their oath.

Compared to the last two volumes, The Magic Order 3 #2 feels like a slow burn. Even with its twists and turns, it seems slower. However, I feel like that’s by design. The bread crumbs are there and they’re leading us to something spectacular.

As you can see from the snippets above, the art is as great as ever. The panel of the Moonstone parents kissing is one of my favorite panels. Even in the creepiest of places, true love survives. If you want to see more then don’t forget to pick up a copy of The Magic Order 3 #2 when it releases.

The Magic Order 3 #2 hits the shelves Wednesday 31st August.
