Reports surfaced earlier last week that Robert Pattinson (Twilight) was cast as Bruce Wayne/Batman in Matt Reeves’ The Batman. Now, in the wake of costume tests, Pattinson wins the role over Nicholas Holt.
The initial report came from Variety, but minutes later Deadline reported that the role was down to two actors: Pattinson and Nicholas Holt (X-Men: First Class). Now the decision is final, Pattinson is the next Batman.
A costume test occurred last week, between Holt and Pattinson to see which actor best fit the role. Pattinson emerged as the clear choice for the role.
Reeves directed the final two Planet of the Apes sequels and took over the directing duties on The Batman from Ben Affleck two years ago. With Affleck finally deciding to leave the lead role, the hunt was on to find a younger actor for the role.
A number of big names in Hollywood put their names in the hat, including Jack O’Connell and Kit Harrington. With Pattinson tearing up the art film scene in the past few years, he quickly became a front-runner for the role.
Pattinson shows his acting chops off in recent film like The Last City of Z, and Good Time. He has come a long way from the sparkling vampires of the Twilight franchise, and the Harry Potter films.
Reeves isn’t even done with the final draft of the script yet. The director’s gone on record a few times to say that The Batman will feature the great detective side of Batman, in a noir-styled film, rather than an all-out action movie.
Reeves and Dylan Clark will produce the film. Pre-production expects to begin this Summer, with filming beginning late this year or
Pattinson is the second youngest actor to portray Bruce Wayne on the big screen. Christian Bale was 31 at the time of Batman Begins. Pattinson stars in Director Christopher Nolan’s new film opening July 2020.
The Batman explodes into theaters on June 25, 2021.
