Review – Millarworld’s ‘King of Spies #3’

King of Spies #3 release is around the corner. When we last saw Roland King he was putting the world to rights. After a brain tumor diagnosis, he’s hunting down every dirty person he helped in the past. The previous issue puts him in the crosshairs of his own Government and ends with them calling in someone to take him down. That someone turns out to be Roland’s son he doesn’t talk to.

The issue is written by Mark Millar with art by Matteo Scalera. It’s the penultimate issue in this explosive mini-series and it leaves the reader eager to see how it ends. The first two issues are available to buy in any comic book store as well as Comixology if you prefer digital versions.

The issue opens with Roland performing an assassination on a dirty Pope. The execution is clever as it shows another way in which Roland can kill without getting his hands dirty. It also brings the story into real life with the reasonings behind the Pope’s death. This is true for another character in the issue Roland goes after. It’s clear Mark’s been seeing what’s going in the world and turned it on its head.

King of Spies #3 sees father and son come head to head while others from Roland’s past try to kill him. It’s a non-stop action thrill ride. We can only hope to see a live-action adaptation on Netflix soon. Everything comes to a head in the last few pages as you’re left wanting to know how the story ends. However, that’s something you’ll need to wait for as the final issue releases in March.

Matteo Scalera’s art is a perfect complement to the writing as always. Pairing the smooth textures of the surroundings with the rough look of the characters conveys their brutality. As in the image above, he uses two black bars to hide specific parts of the character and it adds levity to a serious moment. The use of the image within an image for the gadget draws your eyes to it.

Millarworld attracts great artists and Matteo Scalera is no exception.

King of Spies #3 releases Wednesday the 8th of February.
