Prodigy is a comic book from Millarworld. As always, Mark Millar writes the script while the art comes from Matteo Buffagni. In the first volume, we meet Edison Crane – the most intelligent man in the world who knows literally everything. With the help of a CIA agent, it’s up to him to stop an invasion from a parallel Earth. It’s everything you expect from a Mark Millar comic – it’s over-the-top, it’s got a twist, it’s fun and it leaves you wanting more.
That’s one of the reasons to be excited about Millarworld’s newest release. Prodigy: the Icarus Society is the second volume featuring Edison Crane. This time, Crane faces a deadlier foe in a society made up of people just as smart as him. The first issue gives enough to whet our appetite while raising several questions. It looks as if this is going to be another winner.
Prodigy: the Icarus Society #1 doesn’t mess around. From the first panel, it throws you into the story and doesn’t relent until the final panel. The first part of the story is gruesome and creates an intriguing case to re-introduce our hero. It also brings a new villain into the limelight who events the playing field. Make sure you’re paying attention to what’s going on as the story jumps between different events. Doing this makes us connect with Edison more as we see how his mind works.
Within Prodigy: the Icarus Society #1 we see more of who Edison is. He consumes every news channel, as well as other things, at the same time first thing in the morning. This is also while he’s doing his exercise. Nothing is off-limits to him as he wants his brain to always be active. This makes him an interesting character as you never know what he’s going to do next.
The art comes from the masterful mind of Matteo Buffgani. He takes over from Rafael Albuquerque, who co-created the series with Mark Millar. One of the pages that sticks out in this issue comes early on when Matteo divides the page into four panels. Except, one of these panels is the full page with the other panels hiding it. Doing this highlights the comparison between the two different events while showing that they’re similar. It’s possibly one of my favorite pages in any comic. If this is how we’re starting, I can’t wait to see where the art goes next.
Prodigy: the Icarus Society #1 is a fun, and gripping, return to the world of Edison Crane.
