Review: Millarworld’s ‘The Magic Order 3 #3’

The Magic Order 3 #3 is the latest issue in the comic series created by Mark Millar and Olivier Coipel. Gigi Cavenago provides the art for this volume. Meanwhile, Image Comics The Magic Order is published under the Millarworld label. As it stands, this is the third volume in the series. The first two are available to purchase and you can find my reviews on the second volume here.

For those who don’t know, The Magic Order revolves around a group of magic wielders who protect the world from dangerous threats. It also deals with heavy subjects like addiction. The story centres around the family at the centre of The Magic Order: the Moonstones. In particular, it’s the rebel daughter Cordelia whose usually more of a focus.

Releasing on Wednesday the 28th of September, The Magic Order 3 #3 picks up where the previous issue ended. The patriarch and matriarch of the Moonstone family reunite and wax lyrical on their past. This issue sees them ready to fight a foe that claimed the life of someone the latter loved a long time ago.

Meanwhile, Rosie (the youngest of the family) is helping her uncles deal with violent ghosts who possess the living. With only one left, she decides to track it down without any adult supervision. What could possibly go wrong?… or right?

For fans of Cordelia, don’t get your hopes up too much. This is a Cordelia-lite issue.

Gigi Canvenago enriches the storytelling experience through his masterful art. There’s a series of panels where characters are underwater. He employs shading and cinematic framing to convey the depths of the water. As the characters go deeper, the panel becomes darker. It’s also as if it’s a warning for what awaits the characters the deeper they go.

There’s also a car chase where the art jumps off the page to convey the danger of the situation. I’ll go as far as to say it’s one of my favorite sequences from this series.

The Magic Order 3 #3 is available from Wednesday the 26th of September.
