Review – Millarworld’s ‘The Magic Order Vol 2 #4’

The Magic Order Vol 2 #4 is the latest issue in Millarworld‘s The Magic Order. It follows Cordelia Moonstone and the magical organisation she leads. In this volume, they’re fighting against the Korne family who hates the Moonstones for what they did to their ancestors. Beware of spoilers from the previous issues as I’ll be talking about them too.

The third issue ends with Francis – a recovering addict – losing control and killing an ally. Issue 4 opens with the aftermath and raises questions on Francis’ state, as well as what the other members of the Magic Order will do. Unfortunately for Cordelia, it means making a tough decision about her ex.

As always, Mark Millar is behind the script and Stuart Immonen provides the art.

The Magic Order Vol 2 #4 doesn’t only revolve around Francis. It also shows how Harun’s death affects his allies, especially Kevin Mitchell. While the issue isn’t as bombastic as the others, it’s a delve into the characters and their mental states. It’s a calm before the eventual storm which still manages to pack a couple of gut-twisting punches.

It feels as if I’m repeating myself every time I review the series but each issue is better than the last. What Mark’s done with the Magic Order is something special. The last panel isn’t as big as what’s come before, or at least it isn’t the type to leave you open-mouthed. However, it’s certainly interesting in a different way given what it’s setting up.

With the way this issue ends, it appears the series is gearing up for something huge.

The art by Stuart Immonen is as fantastic as always. My favorite page from this issue has a lot going on but it focuses on one person’s reaction to it. Cordelia is drawn without a background to show she’s part of it all. By doing this it also creates a 3D effect, drawing the reader’s attention to her. Her reaction is the most important considering she’s the leader and the person in trouble is her ex trying to win her back.

Another favorite of mine in the issue is when two characters are getting ready. While it doesn’t sound interesting as a panel, it actually is. While some might go into the minute details, taking up several pages, Stuart doesn’t. He utilises the comic version of a montage and keeps it to one page via overlaying scenes into other scenes.

The Magic Order Vol 2 #4 hits the shelves Wednesday the 2nd of February.
